While most suppliers are preparing for the future. Kadant is creating it. Kadant’s research and development activities are the force behind the patented technologies and innovative products that we bring to papermaking and to other process industries worldwide.
With major R&D facilities in Europe and the USA, Kadant is uniquely positioned to address process industry challenges and needs for improved fiber processing, heat transfer, doctoring, and fluid handling. In addition to internal product development activities, our research centers allow customers to simulate their own operating conditions and applications to identify and quantify opportunities for improvement.

At the Kadant Research & Development Center in Three Rivers, Michigan, we test different equipment combinations and system components under the conditions of a particular customer's operation. Through the data gathered, Kadant can help determine the right components to maximize machine performance. System analysis and seal technology is also a major area of study for Kadant engineers.

Since 1975, Kadant's Paper Drying Seminar has offered papermakers an inside look at the paper drying process. With more than 2,500 attendees to date, Kadant is committed to sharing the knowledge through ongoing seminars and training programs.
Research and Development of Doctors
Material Testing Machine – Performs tension, compression, and flexural tests at temperatures up to 400°F.
Wear Tester – Comprised of a rotating roll with surface speeds up to 10,000 fpm. Kadant Web Systems works closely with roll suppliers to obtain the latest roll covers for testing. Our numerous in-house rolls include ceramic, composite, steel, and soft nip calender rolls. The equipment can testblade samples at different loads and blade angles to determine their wear rate in volume loss per hour. In addition, the surface roughness of the roll is measured with a profilometer before and after the wear tests to determine the effect of the different blade materials on the roll surface.
Finite Element Analysis (FEA) – A design and research tool used to perform static, dynamic, thermal, and vibration analysis of doctor structures, doctor blade holders, and doctor blades
Vibration Analyzer – Provides important design information by measuring and analyzing vibration signals. The Vibration Analyzer is also used in the field to identify the source of problem vibrations on the paper machine.
